Properties of Wool

This winter, we released our first-ever style in Climate Beneficial™ wool, a certification program by Fibershed. We chose to make our Hida Mountain Pants, our best-selling style, in wool. If sales go well, hopefully next year we can release an entire Climate Beneficial™ Wool collection.

Wool is one of the most sustainable fibers on the planet and it's life cycle is quite traceable which enables us, via Fibershed's certification program, to ensure that in the growth & production of this wool, we are actually sequestering carbon from the atmosphere.

Sustainability in fashion is more widespread than ever, yet it's never meant less. What I'm trying to say is, most "sustainable clothes" are not truly sustainable. Sustainable means they can be made over and over again and it have a neutral impact on the resources of our planet and the people involved. These pants, guaranteed by a trustworthy 3rd-party certification program, go beyond that. It truly amazes me and it's an honor to bring these pants into the world.

Now let's talk technicalities. Wool is pretty cool. It has characteristics athletic clothes companies try to replicate with chemicals and in-depth processes, fire-resistant properties fleece fabric and furniture legally have to meet and longevity properties far beyond most fabrics. All while also being luxuriously fancy. Let's dig in.

Properties Of Wool

Climate beneficial™ — It's actually GOOD FOR THE EARTH. So few things are. It's delightful to wear something you know with certainty is benefiting the planet and people involved. So rare and special.
Thermoregulating — This means that if you're hot, wool will transmit heat out and through, cooling you off. If you're cold, wool will insulate and warm you. In the outdoor and athletic gear industry, businesses spend excessive time and money trying to replicate something wool simply has for their plastic clothes.
Hypoallergenic — Wool is relatively unlikely to cause allergies and if you're in an environment where allergies are stimulated, it's a good choice to wear as it won't worsen your symptoms and I've personally found, even help calm mine.
Durable — If you were to zoom way in on a single wool and cotton fiber and start trying to bend and break them, you'd break the cotton way before the wool. This points to how durable wool is. Any wool clothes you buy are going to last a very, very, very long time.
Moisture wicking — This means that wool can move a lot of moisture where it needs to go. If you wear your wool pants out in the rain, you're pretty likely to still feel warm and dry. Wool also manages to still feel warm even if it's rather wet. This is a property I love at sea... I've got a giant wool blanket for our cockpit that's got me through many a cold night sail.
Mildew and mold resistant — This really comes to matter in highly humid environments, but wool is much less prone to mold and mildew than your average piece of clothing.
Fire resistant — Did you know that many fabric have to pass a fire retardancy test to be legal? Wool passes that test with straight As without a single thing being done to it. The average fabric sadly has fire retardants added to it. There will be none of that at Danu Organic. But wool gets extra credit because it's fire retardancy is exceptional making it a great choice for something like a sofa where fire retardancy laws are even stricter.
